Research kit — decision log and receipt hygiene

Why a thin research kit beats more tabs—notebook, scanner, and labels for AI shopping decisions. One Amazon search per item (v00ko-20).

Buy for a bottleneck. A notes app is enough until returns, warranties, or partner debates need a durable trail. Links are Amazon.com searches (tag v00ko-20); we may earn a commission. Affiliate disclosure.

Why research still needs a desk

AI compresses comparison time. It does not automatically:

  1. Capture the decision — which constraints you stated, which SKU you rejected, and why.
  2. Survive the return window — serials, invoices, and “shipped on” dates.
  3. Explain the buy to someone else — partner, roommate, finance ops.

The kit is three cheap jobs: write, digitize, label.

Item notes (why / how / skip)

Hardcover dotted notebook

Why: Chats scroll away. A one-page template (need / constraints / top 3 / wait-or-buy) survives the weekend.

How: One purchase per spread. Paste the winning prompt stub; note the final retailer URL and price you actually paid.

Skip: You already export chat transcripts into a dated vault.

Portable document scanner

Why: Glare-y phone shots fail warranty tickets. Flat scans are boring and reliable.

How: Scan on unbox day; filename YYYY-MM-DD-brand-item.pdf. Keep until the return window closes, then archive.

Skip: Low-ticket consumables with no warranty path.

Portable label maker

Why: Return chaos is a tax on AI impulse. Labels beat Sharpie archaeology.

How: Label the box with order ID + “return by” date before it goes to the closet.

Skip: You rarely return and already use painter’s tape.

Buy order (honest)

  1. Notebook (or commit to a note template)—free discipline first.
  2. Scanner only when warranty/return volume justifies it.
  3. Label maker last.
